Montaigne

Montaigne is currently ruled by King Leon Alexander XIV, styling himself l’Empereur. He is on his third wife: the first was a Montaigne peasant, the second was Princess Rosa Velasquez del Sandoval of Castille, and the third is a Vodacce Fate Witch named Morella. So far he has eight daughters but no male heir.

In 1664, Leon Alexander openly declared himself to be a sorcerer, defying the Vaticine Church. Two years later, the Hierophant died under mysterious circumstances while on a visit to Montaigne. Left unchecked, the Inquisition raised an army of fanatics and marched on Montaigne. The turning point of the war came when a corporal named Montegue held the King’s residence against the attackers, in a battle known as Montegue’s Stand. For his efforts, Montegue was promoted to General, given the hand of ’Empereur’s youngest daughter in marriage, and sent off to conquer Castille.

Montegue prosecuted the Castillian war with great success, until (a year ago) he was without explanation recalled to the capital, given 100,000 men and told “go conquer Ussura” — something that hasn’t ever been done before.
